Happy Birthday!

Birth Celebration for Kobo Daishi

Yesterday the temple celebrated the birthday of Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. “Birthday” is used a somewhat symbolic sense, it was explained to me that June 15th was chosen not for Kukai’s literal day of birth, but because it coincides with the day his master, Hui-kuo, passed away making Kukai no longer a student, but a teacher of esoteric Buddhism. To celebrate his birthday, the monks at Ninna-ji Temple held a service at Mie-do, the Founder’s Hall, where a statue of Kobo Daishi is enshrined.
